Rates
The rates are the same ones our students pay. There is no membership fee and no joining fee. You fly, we bill the hours, and the daily minimum only matters when you keep the airplane overnight.

Plus sales tax where applicable. Effective September 2026. Prepaid block hours are discounted; ask our team for the current options and terms.
$175 an hour
Fuel is in the rate. You bring the airplane back and we fill it from our own fuel farm. The simple choice for local flying, pattern work and day trips that start and end at Fairchild.
$130 an hour
You pay for the fuel you use, wherever you buy it. Worth considering on a longer trip where you will refuel away from home. We sell fuel here too, at the posted price.
Overnight and multi-day rentals carry a four-hour daily minimum. Fly four hours or more each day and you pay only for the hours you fly. Fly less, and the day is billed at four hours. It keeps the aircraft available for the students and pilots who share it.

The aircraft
Stable, forgiving and honest about what you ask of it. Our 172s carry traditional round-dial instruments with a Garmin 430 GPS, and their high wing keeps the ground in view from every seat, which is the whole point of flying the Peninsula.
Citizen Air owns its 172s, and our own A&P and IA technicians maintain them in our own hangars. They are the same aircraft our students learn in, so they fly most days and get looked at every time they come back.

Before you rent
You do not need to have trained with us. Pilots who earned their certificate elsewhere, or who have just moved to the Peninsula, rent from us after the same checkout our own graduates fly.
Certificate
A private pilot certificate is the minimum. Bring the certificate itself, a government photo ID, and the medical certificate or other FAA medical qualification you fly under.
Checkout
If you are current, you take a short written test on the aircraft and our local procedures, then fly the 172 with a Citizen Air instructor. Plan on half an hour in the air at minimum, longer depending on your experience and what you show us. The flight covers what is particular to our aircraft, the local procedures, and the terrain, water and weather that make flying here different. Billed at the published rates.
Currency
A flight review within the last 24 months, and the recent takeoffs and landings the FAA requires before you carry passengers. If it has been a while since you last flew our aircraft, plan on a short flight with an instructor before you take one out alone.
Insurance and paperwork
You sign our rental agreement at the checkout. Tell us about any non-owned aircraft insurance you carry, and we will go through what we require before you fly. Bring your logbook, or a digital one you can show us, so we can confirm your flight review and recent flights.
How it works
Tell us about your certificate, your hours and how you plan to fly. We answer within two hours during the day and set a time for your checkout.
A short written test on the aircraft and local procedures, then a flight with one of our instructors in the 172 you will rent, half an hour or more.
Reserve by phone, email or at our desk in the Fairchild terminal, for an hour, a day or a weekend.
The aircraft is fueled and ready on the ramp. Our line crew is on the field if you need anything.
Note the times, tell us about anything you noticed, and pay for the hours you flew.
Where a 172 takes you
From Fairchild, the Olympics start just south of the runway and the San Juan Islands are half an hour away. Most of the places pilots fly to for lunch are within an hour, so a day trip fits comfortably inside a same-day rental.
Typical flight times at about 120 knots, one way, in good weather. Your own planning governs. Ask us before a trip outside the United States; it takes advance arrangement.

Who you are renting from
Citizen Air is an FAA Part 135 air carrier and the full-service FBO on the field, with its own aircraft, hangars, fuel farm and maintenance team. Rental is one part of that, not a side business.
Our A&P and IA technicians inspect and maintain the 172s in our own hangars. When something needs attention, the person fixing it works down the hall, and the aircraft does not leave the field for it.
We run the fuel farm on the field. Wet rentals come back to a full tank without a detour; dry renters buy fuel from us at the posted price or wherever they land.
The instructors who check you out fly Citizen Air's charter and SoundPass trips across the region, and they teach in these 172s. The local procedures you learn are the ones they use.
Policies
Reserve by phone, email or at the desk. The 172s are shared with our students, so book ahead for weekends and for overnight trips, and tell us if you need the airplane back at a set time.
Give us 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel, so the airplane can go to someone else. Late cancellations and no-shows may be billed.
If the weather is below your minimums or ours, or the aircraft is unavailable, there is no charge. You are pilot in command; the decision not to go is always yours to make.
Tie the aircraft down properly and keep an eye on it overnight. If anything looks wrong before a leg, call us before you fly it; we would rather send a technician than have you guess.
Renting often?

Pilots who rent most weekends usually want the same three things: a faster airplane, a predictable schedule and no surprises. A share of our Cirrus SR22 gives you all three: a newer, faster airplane, managed, crewed and maintained by us, with shares starting at one sixteenth.
Shares are sold or leased, and our team can walk through what your flying would cost as a share compared with renting by the hour.
